2020-21 DStv Premiership
29-31 January 2021
The Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will headline this weekend's
2020-21 DStv Premiership action.
Four points separate the two rivals who find themselves somewhat off the pace as we approach the halfway mark in the current campaign. While Pirates started the season on a seven-game unbeaten run, they've yet to hit full tilt and will play host to an improving Chiefs outfit that have successfully recovered from a dismal start.
The Amakhosi are on a five-game unbeaten run in the league having followed wins over AmaZulu, Cape Town City and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila with successive draws against Stellenbosch FC and Baroka FC.
Chiefs are yet to lose a game in which Samir Nurkovic has started this season and the Serbian has captained the Glamour Boys in their two most recent matches following injury to Ramahlwe Mphahlele.
Pirates, though, will take confidence from the fact that they have already beaten Chiefs twice this season. The Buccaneers defeated their fierce rivals 5-0 on aggregate on their way to winning the 2020 MTN8 title.
An enthralling clash between SuperSport United and Swallows FC will also take place on Saturday with the two teams currently in second and third-place on the Premiership standings respectively.
Matsatsantsa are unbeaten in nine fixtures and boast the league's leading goalscorer in Bradley Grobler. The 33-year-old, who became SuperSport's all-time top scorer earlier this month, has found the back of the net 12 times in 13 matches in the current campaign.
Swallows and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns have yet to lose a game this season. The Birds kept that record intact with a 97th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw away to the Brazilians last weekend and are currently tied on 27 points with both Sundowns and SuperSport atop the league standings. A remarkable feat for a team who won promotion back to South Africa's elite league just last season.
"They have three coaches there. I saw one coach also putting tactics all over social media trying to get others involved, so they needed maybe more on the bench than the three of them," said Swallows FC head coach Brandon Truter following their result at Lucas Moripe Stadium, the same venue at which they will face Sundowns' Tshwane rivals this week.
Fourth-placed Cape Town City, who are the leading goalscorers in the division, will be away to Baroka FC on Sunday while Sundowns will host an improving Chippa United in the country's capital city.
AmaZulu and Stellenbosch FC will kick-off this weekend's round of fixtures in Durban on Friday while Bloemfontein Celtic will host bottom of the table Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.
Also in action on Saturday will be Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United who will meet in a KwaZulu-Natal Derby match while Black Leopards, who parted ways with Dylan Kerr following defeat to the Chilli Boys last week, host Owen da Gama's TS Galaxy in Thohoyandou.
