McLaren's Lando Norris has vowed to "step it up" at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on Sunday, April 20 after describing his performance in Sakhir as "messy".

The Brit only started sixth on the grid in the Bahrain Grand Prix, but he quickly climbed to third after passing Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

However, Norris incurred a five-second penalty for lining up ahead of his grid box which was served at the first round of pit stops and he also had to give back his place to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton after overtaking his compatriot off the track.

The 25-year-old driver still managed to finish third on the podium behind race winner Oscar Piastri and Mercedes' George Russell following a thrilling battle with Leclerc and his fellow Brit in the final few laps.

The P3 allowed Norris to reclaim the lead from Piastri in the Drivers' Championship standings and he heads to Jeddah three points clear of his team-mate.

The winner of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix was aware that he made too many errors on the Bahrain International Circuit, but still saw positives from the race.

"A tough race. Of course, I made too many mistakes with the overtakes, the out of position [moment on the grid] – it was a messy race from me," Norris admitted.

"I'm disappointed not to bring home a 1-2 for McLaren, because that would have been lovely at home [for the team]. A tough one, but still a few positives.

"It was good racing throughout, so no complaints. It was good fun, good overtakes, everyone hard and on the limit, as it should be.

"Oscar did a good job, so congrats to Oscar and the whole McLaren team. I'll try to step it up for next weekend [in Saudi Arabia]."

2025 Bahrain Grand Prix results:
