Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: Turffontein

Betway Ambassadors, De Kock Racing, are gearing up for the last day of The Championships season at Turffontein, next Saturday. They will be saddling runners at four meetings ahead of the big day, when there will be six Graded features and a Listed contest, and some of the results may determine who will be honoured at the forthcoming Highveld awards ceremony.

Mathew de Kock provided runner comments for this Saturday’s meeting at Turffontein (standside track), HWB Greyville on Sunday, HWB Scottsville next Wednesday and Turffontein (inside track) on Thursday.

Turffontein, Saturday 19 April:

Race 3, 1400m: “Read All About should enjoy the extra ground. He came from off the pace to win his 1000m debut and has been showing a need for this kind of trip. He has the pedigree to back it up. If he puts his best foot forward, he will go close.”

Race 6, 1400m: “We have Great Notion in this apprentice’s handicap with a 4kg claimer on board. She is consistent and doing well. If it wasn’t for the widest of draws we would’ve given her a shout, but that is a concern, so we’ll be happy to get a place from her.”

HWB Greyville, Sunday, 20 April:
Race 6, 1600m: “Fireburst has shown us some improvement in work after her most recent start. We give her an eachway chance.”

Race 9, 1800m: Flying Hafla needed her last run, that was a nice effort and she has shown good form beyond a mile. A decent run is expected, she has eachway prospects.”

HWB Scottsville, Wednesday 23 April:
Race 1, 1200m: “A first-timer in Buffalo Bill Cody colt, Yipee Kiyay. He’s a youngster showing us some reasonable work at home and on that must have a chance first-up, but there are a number of unknown factors in the race.

Race 3, 1000m: “Mojo Man won a similar race for us last time and he is at the same level of form. The apprentice’s 4kg claim is in our favour, so he has a winning chance again.”

Race 4, 1600m: “Nocturnal Flight needed his first run for us at Greyville recently, and he needs at least another run to bring him on. He is not where we want him to be yet, and has a very deep draw to contend with.”

Race 5, 1600m: “Icy Blast improved last time, as expected, ran a good race from wide out. As noted, he should now start putting himself in contention, so he warrants inclusion alongside Tyrconnell, who remains in good racing shape. Both meet Plaza Accord on better terms.”

Race 6: Another pair here in the form of Khetiwe’s Destiny, who is coming along the right way, has the joint-highest rating in the race and is showing us very good work. She can win this. Expect Temptation ran on late in his first start for us. That was quite a good effort, because he needed it. He is still a gallop short of his best, but a good run is likely. He has a Quartet chance.”

Turffontein, Thursday, 24 April:
Race 2, 1200m: “Balule is a gelded two-year-old, also by Buffalo Bill Cody and owned by Charles Savage and partners. They also raced his dam, Balustrade. She was quite a good filly, only raced three times for one win, but had to be retired early. We’re hoping her progeny can do well. Balule is a nice type of horse, he is showing us enough promise to give him a chance first time out, but he has a stiff task having drawn 9-9 on the inside track.
