2020-21 DStv Premiership

12-14 February January 2021

SuperSport United and Swallows FC will be aiming to close the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns atop the 2020-21 DStv Premiership standings.

The Brazilians won't be in action this coming weekend due to Caf Champions League commitments, allowing both SuperSport and Swallows the chance to move within two points of the leaders with victory in their respective matches.

The Birds have drawn their last three matches, but like Sundowns, remain unbeaten this season. Swallows have shown great resilience in coming from behind to draw against Orlando Pirates, Sundowns and SuperSport in recent weeks and head into their match at home to AmaZulu on Sunday in third spot on the league standings.

“It’s not about me. I’ve so many experienced boys around me," said Swallows head coach Brandon Truter. “You’re talking about Musa [Nyatama]‚ Wandisile [Letlabika]‚ Vuyo [Mere]‚ Cheeseboy [Lebohang Mokoena]‚ [Virgil] Vries‚ there’s so much experience in this team.

“Yes, some of the players are new in the team‚ but they have won things in the past. They are players who’ve been there and done that -- so giving up is not in our character and that’s what we preach.

“They want to play and they want to win all the time. The intensity at training is so high that sometimes I have to say stop it, it’s enough now.

“It carries over in the match and that’s what you want. If you can transfer your training content into the match‚ it is going to serve you well and we’ve seen it in so many games.”

Benni McCarthy has started to get the best out of Usuthu and the KwaZulu-Natal club make the trip up north on a three-game winning run.

SuperSport, who are also locked 28 points, will be hoping for a return to winning ways after their controversial loss away to Bloemfontein Celtic earlier this week. Matsatsantsa looked on course for at least a point but Siwelele would score late, albeit from an offside position, to claim a much needed win ahead of Chippa United's visit to the Free State province.

Kaitano Tembo's men host Cape Town City in Atteridgeville on Saturday. The Citizens also suffered defeat in their most recent encounter after being outplayed by Orlando Pirates in a 2-0 loss on Tuesday evening. SuperSport and City have scored 50 goals between them this season which bodes well for a high-scoring affair.

This weekend's action kicks off on Friday late afternoon with Stellenbosch FC at home to fifth-placed Golden Arrows while Maritzburg United host Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in a relegation six-pointer.

TTM are winless in 10 matches and have lost their last five on the spin. The Limpopo club are locked on nine points with both Maritzburg and bottom of the table Black Leopards after 14 matches.

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will also not be in DStv Premiership action this weekend due to continental commitments.
