The Americans were the first World Cup winners in the inaugural tournament in China back in 1991, when they defeated Norway 2-1 in the final in Guangzhou.

Their next triumph arrived on home soil in 1999, with a famous team overcoming China on penalties in the final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

The US then had to wait until the 2011 tournament in Germany to return to the final, though for the first time they tasted disappointment in the championship match, going down on penalties at the hands of Japan after the match in Frankfurt ended 2-2.

However, United States gained revenge four years later in Canada, when the final in Vancouver saw claim a 5-2 win over Japan and become the first three-time champion of the Women’s World Cup.
