It will be the 147th Open Championship and Carnoustie will be hosting the competition for eighth time with the tournament having been established in October 1860.

 

The tournament is often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf.

 

This year’s competition will see 156 players in the field and the prize fund is $10,500,000, while the winner's share is $1,890,000.

Jordan Spieth

The current champion is Jordan Spieth, who won the 146th Open at Royal Birkdale in 2017 with a score of 268. 

 

The 24-year-old American golfer will face good competition from his countryman Tiger Woods, who is set to play at The Open for the first time since 2015.

 

Woods, 42, will be looking to clinch his fourth The Open title in Scotland and add to his tally of 14 Major Championships in the process. 

Rory McIlroy


Current world No.1 Dustin Johnson, Englishman Justin Rose and Northern Irish star  Rory McIlroy are other big names which are expected to compete at the Carnoustie Golf Links.

 

McIlroy won the 2014 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool in Liverpool, England by two strokes over American star Rickie Fowler and Spanish player Sergio García. 

 

Furthermore, McIlroy and Woods are the only golfers to win both The Silver Medal and The Gold Medal at The Open.
