2018/19 Premier League
Round 38 preview
Sunday 12 May 2019
No less than three African forwards are in the running to win the 2018/19 Premier League Golden Boot (top scorer’s award) when the season wraps up with 10 simultaneous matches on Sunday 12 May 2019.
The current favourite to take home the prize (for a second successive year) is Liverpool’s Egyptian attacker Mohamed Salah. Despite a heavy collision with Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka last weekend which ruled him out of the Reds’ UEFA Champions League clash with Barcelona, he is expected to return for their domestic clash at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers and add to his tally of 22 league goals.
One of the men chasing Salah down is teammate Sadio Mane, who has racked up 20 in the Premier League season and been one of the driving forces behind Liverpool’s push for the title.
Also on 20 goals in Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has enjoyed a fine first full season in the English top flight, even if the Gunners have all but certainly failed in their attempt to return to the UEFA Champions League. He has perhaps the toughest task in trying to add to his goal tally, with Arsenal’s opponents Burnley renowned for their defensive approach.
The final protagonist in the race for the Golden Boot is Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who also sits on 20 goals. The Argentine will be more concerned with the Citizens beating Brighton & Hove Albion away from home to claim the title, but it could yet be a day of double celebration for Aguero.
