The next Highveld race meeting is on Tuesday, 26 September on the inside track at Turffontein. With no weekend racing in Johannesburg, Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock has given us a brief on his Tuesday runners.
The stable sends out three runners in Race 2 over 1450m, one of which is the first-timer
Al Akhtaar. He’s a son of Silvano out of a Giant’s Causeway mare, bred for more ground and Mike confirmed: “Al Akhtaar needs further, this is an introductory run and he is drawn wide, so we’re hoping to see him stay on and come out of the race well.”
The other pair is
Festival Magic and
Japanese Star and Mike commented: “Festival Magic made a decent debut over this course and distance when he was slow away. He’ll know more about it now, but he is another who needs further to come into his own. He’s also drawn widest of all and that won’t help. He will be staying on.
“Japanese Star is probably the best of the three in this race because he is best suited. He’s come on from his 1200m debut, has an inside draw and I give him an eachway chance.”
Griffin Park will have his third career run in Race 3 over 1000m and also has the benefit of a good draw. “He has some pace and comes from two fair formlines over 1200m. He should run a decent race, he has an eachway shout.”
Here are some form pointers for the meeting at Durbanville on Saturday. There are good-sized fields and plenty of betting opportunities, also on the tote via the
Betway portal.
Race 1: Justin Snaith’s stable jockey Grant van Niekerk is on the likely favourite
Get Impressed, but it is worth noting his comments about the stable companion,
Lightning Glow. He said: “Doing great at home, big runner!” Sounds like a box Swinger on the pair will be in order.
Race 3: Candice Bass Robinson and her connections will be disappointed if
Song Of Myself is beaten here, following an excellent debut over track and trip. Bi-pot and P/A banker.
Race 4: A race in which the draw could spoil the party for favourites,
Connery and
Iguguletho. Take note, again, of the Snaith’s stable’s comments about their first-timer,
Call To Unite: “Speedy type and could surprise.” Add this one to your P/A for cover.
Race 5: There is a whisper for
Trip To Maputo in an open race. She’s a likely fast improver, but has the draw against her.
Race 7: One gets the feeling that
Triple Time has always been a decent sort that was waiting to be gelded. In this Listed feature, his third run after gelding, he looks the part off a handy weight.
Race 9: You’ll get a run for your money with Piet Steyn’s sprinter,
Bluff On Bluff, well suited to this course and distance and handily weighted.
Here are a few pointers for Sunday’s tricky eight-trace programme on the Polytrack at Greyville:
Race 1: Interesting jockey bookings from Michael Roberts, as stable jock Rachel Venniker gets off
Railroad for the battling
Zabadak. Both have
Babylon to beat. He chased hard last time, won’t be far off if he takes to the Poly.
Race 2: Well-bred newcomer
Mad World won’t have to be a star to beat this field. Watch betting.
Race 7:
Aqua Bolt is at his lowest rating since August 2020. He finally showed some form over further than 1200m recently and, as an older horse now, should like this 1400m. Upset chance.
Race 8:
William Rufus has run well against somewhat stronger. He needed his last run, should give a good account.
