Louis van Gaal will be eyeing an instant impact on his return to coaching when the Netherlands take on Norway in a Group G
2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Oslo on Wednesday evening.
Oranje have placed their World Cup fortunes in the hands of the 70-year-old who has taken up the role as Netherlands boss for the third time.
The former Ajax, Barcelona, AC milan and Manchester United manager has replaced Frank de Boer who oversaw a disappointing Euro 2020 campaign, which ended in the Round of 16 with defeat to Czech Republic.
Van Gaal told the Dutch FA's website: "Dutch football has always been close to my heart and national coaching is in my view a key position for the further advancement of our football.
"Moreover, I consider it an honour to coach the Dutch national team.
"There is little time for the next qualifying matches, which are immediately crucial for participation in the World Cup."
The Netherlands are tied on six points with both Montenegro and Norway, while Turkey lead the way on seven points after three matches.
Norway failed to qualify for Euro 2020 but have an exciting squad which includes the likes of Erling Haaland and captain Martin Odegaard.
This will be the first meeting between the two nations since a FIFA World Cup qualifier in 2009 which the Dutch won 2-0. The Netherlands would go on to lose in the final to Spain in South Africa the following year.
Norway vs Netherlands head-to-head statistics:
Matches: 9
Norway wins: 1
Netherlands wins: 6
Draws: 2
