Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: Turffontein

Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock has his runners in good form for the Betway feature season on the Highveld and elsewhere, and he hopes to have another winner or two this weekend to keep last weekend’s momentum going.

The Pick 6 at Turffontein on Saturday starts with a R1-million carryover and the pool could grow to R5-million. The two Betway-sponsored feature races have both attracted full and competitive fields and the other legs are similarly tricky, which could lead to a whopping dividend. If you place your TAB Pick 6 bets via the Betway Tote portal, you’ll get your 6% betting tax refunded at month-end.

Mike’s seven Saturday runners all compete in respective Pick 6 legs and he provided some thoughts on their chances, to help punters.

Race 4, 2600m: “Mambo Come Tesio stays well, we know, but he looks well held here and is an unlikely winner.”

Race 5, 1200m: “This is a strong Graduation Plate, we can’t be sure about the ratings yet, but we have two nice fillies who should both be included in your play. Calantha had knee surgery after she won her Maiden last January. She’s recovered well and her work is very good. I think she’ll be in the money. Say It Loud is another nice type, she’ll need a bit of luck in running but I’d include her in the Pick 6 too. There are higher-rated fillies against us, but this race will give us an idea where we stand.”

Race 6, 1450m: “A good quality race in which various factors will play a role. Our filly White Pearl comes off a rest after running unplaced in the SA Fillies Sprint. She’s only won two races so far, but that is not a true reflection of her ability, she is talented. She needed her rest after quite a tough season, she’s doing well at home and she races well fresh. She’s one you have to include in this open race.”

Race 7, 1450m: “This is a strong renewal of the Betway Spring Challenge. I think Zinovi’s rating is a bit high at 114 and he has a bit to do on that. He is super fit, however, has a Quartet chance. Gimmeanotherchance ran against the best at top level last season. He’s a decent horse. I think his four-year-old career will be better than his three-year-old career. He is looking good and working well, should run a good race, bring him into your play.”
Mike saddles three runners at the HWB Greyville meeting on Sunday.

The first is Destiny Of Fire, the lowest rated in Race 7, the Beach Beauty Mile. Mike said: “This is again an interesting race to see how accurate the ratings are. Destiny Of Fire is not bad at all, she can run and I give her a shout in this field.”

Next is Tyrconnel in Race 8 over 1600m, and Mike commented: “He’s another coming off quite a long rest but he, too, has benefited from his break. He is a capable horse and he’s doing well in his work. There are some hard knockers against him but with his handy weight he could be involved in the finish.

Flying Hafla goes to post in Race 9 over 1600m and will be ridden by Serino Moodley, successful for the yard recently. Mike said: “She was slow off in her last start, but ran a fair race. She is still immature and we gave her a few weeks off in the paddock. She’s come back well, she’s in good shape and she has a chance here. I think Mike Miller’s filly Warrior Royale is the filly to beat.”
