2023/24 DStv Premiership
Matchday 9
3-5 October 2023
Golden Arrows have a chance to close the 10-point gap to the league leaders as managerless Cape Town Spurs attempt to arrest a seven-match losing start to the season.
The midweek action gets underway on Tuesday evening when Kaizer Chiefs welcome Cape Town City to the FNB Stadium.
The Glamour Boys (6th) registered just their third win of the campaign after they beat Sekhukhune United 2-1 on September 27 to halt a run of two matches without victory. The Citizens (9th) also returned to winning ways with a 3-1 triumph over local rivals Cape Town Spurs on September 30, having picked up just one point from their previous five outings.
Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki has called on his players to show the same application against City after seeing them make progress in the last few games.
"I think it's more of a build-up if ever we look at the last three matches we played, in terms of the application and implementation of our tactical approach, I think we are progressing in that regard," Ntseki said.
"As much as we conceded first [against Sekhukhune], I think we showed a lot of resilience in coming back and getting ourselves the equalising goal and also leading and ultimately winning the game.
"The most important thing is that we take the attitude, confidence and courage we showed to the next game."
Then on Wednesday, Moroka Swallows have the opportunity to move up to second place when they host Chippa United at the Dobsonville Stadium.
Steve Komphela has made an impressive start to life at Swallows, winning four of his opening seven matches to close within a point of Arrows in third position, with the most recent result a 2-1 win over AmaZulu on September 29. The Chilli Boys (5th) find themselves only one point further off after pulling off a surprise 1-0 win over SuperSport United three days earlier.
Meanwhile, SuperSport United will look to capitalise on Cape Town Spurs' woes when they clash at Athlone Stadium.
The Urban Warriors (16th) parted ways with head coach Shaun Bartlett in the wake of the iKapa derby defeat to City, which set a new PSL record for successive losses at the start of a season. Matsatsantsa dropped to fourth in the standings following the setback at Chippa - their second defeat in three games - and Gavin Hunt bemoaned their failure to haul in Mamelodi Sundowns.
"Tonight was the big opportunity for us [to close the gap], but we have to try and get above two points per game which we are going to need much more at this stage," Hunt said after the match in Gqeberha.
"Right now [we played] seven games, so there is a long way to go, but we are a better team that's for sure."
Elsewhere, Richards Bay (15th) and Polokwane City (8th) square off at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium, with TS Galaxy (11th) making the long journey to the Danie Craven Stadium to take on Stellenbosch (14th).
In the one fixture taking place on Thursday, Golden Arrows will look to keep the momentum going when they lock horns with Sekhukhune United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Abafana Bes'thende extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 2-1 success against Spurs in the Mother City on September 19 to leapfrog SuperSport into second place. Babina Noko (7th) lost for the first time in four games as they squandered the lead to go down 2-1 to Chiefs.
