2024/25 Betway Premiership
Matchday 7
Mamelodi Sundowns v Polokwane City
Loftus Versfeld
Pretoria, South Africa
Wednesday, 6 November 2024
Kick-off is at 19h30
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi is hoping the goals will flow when they meet Polokwane City for the second time in the space of 11 days at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday, November 6.
Bafana ba Style saw their perfect start in the
Betway Premiership come to an end at the hands of Rise And Shine, who ran out narrow 1-0 victors in the reverse fixture on October 27.
It's not often that two teams play each other twice so early on in a season, but the Brazilians have a chance to quickly put things right after Phuti Mohafe's side inflicted only their third defeat in two years.
Masandawana returned to winning ways three days later as they dispatched Cape Town City 3-0 to maintain the three-point gap to league leaders Orlando Pirates in second place.
Downs then turned on the style in a 4-0 rout of Kaizer Chiefs on November 2 to advance to the Carling Knockout semi-finals, where they will face Marumo Gallants.
Polokwane City are continuing to make strides under Mohafe and they built on the surprise result against Sundowns by defeating Royal AM 1-0 on October 30.
The Limpopo outfit have lost just once this term and they currently occupy the CAF Confederation Cup berth, two points behind the Tshwane giants in third position.
Mngqithi expressed concerns after his team failed to register a single shot on target against Rise And Shine last time out and he wants to see plenty of goals from them on this occasion.
"Personally, as the coach I've always enjoyed having teams that score lots of goals. I think I still have a lot of records even in amateur football," he said.
"And the relentlessness that you (media) seem to be up lauding at the moment, I'm very unhappy with the number of goals we scored today because I think we could have scored a lot of goals.
"And it's important when you've got that opportunity to do that (scoring) because Bayern Munich does it. And Leverkusen does it when there's a chance. And the same Sundowns could score 24 goals.
"So, we should always use that as the benchmarks that are there, that are already there to try and always better them. So, I was very unhappy, you may say we were relentless, but I think we were not on the cutting edge, we were not playing for a goal all the time."
