2024/25 Betway Premiership
Matchday 6
29-31 October 2024
SuperSport United will be looking to build on only their second win of the season, while Polokwane City are on cloud 9 after inflicting a first defeat on Mamelodi Sundowns.
SuperSport United travel to the Mpumalanga Stadium for a
Betway Premiership clash with Golden Arrows on Wednesday, October 30 seeking back-to-back wins for the first time in 2024-25.
The Tshwane giants snapped a two-match losing streak with a 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs on October 26 to climb into the top eight, level with Sekhukhune United (7th) and Royal AM (6th) on seven points.
In an all too familiar scenario for Abafana Bes'thende, they have lost their last three games on the spin after kicking off proceedings with back-to-back wins.
A 2-0 defeat to Chippa United on October 26 left Arrows one point outside the top eight in 10th position, level with Chiefs (9th) on six points.
Matsatsantsa head coach Gavin Hunt admits they had to dig deep against Amakhosi after running out on steam in the closing stages due to their recent travels.
"It was always going to be tough with the week we've had, they (Chiefs) didn't play in midweek so you could see we didn't have the legs in the last 5-10 minutes but it was going to be inevitable," Hunt said.
"I thought we did enough, played really well in the first half. Second half, obviously, we let the game come to us and in our situation, we just had to try and get a result so that's what we did."
Polokwane City will be hoping to keep pace with the frontrunners when they take on Royal AM at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday.
Rise And Shine pulled off a surprise as they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 on October 27 to bring an end to the defending champions' perfect start to the campaign.
Phuti Mohafe's side arrested a two-match winless run to move up to fourth in the standings, level with Chippa United (3rd) on 10 points, having played one game less.
Thwihli Thwahla gave the perfect response to their first loss of the season against Bafana ba Style by recording a 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United on October 26.
It was their maiden victory in 2024-25 after drawing their opening four matches and John Maduka's side will be keen to make home advantage count once more after beating Babina Noko in Pietermaritzburg.
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch will be keen to keep the momentum going when they host Marumo Gallants at the Cape Town Stadium on Thursday, October 31.
The Maroons are unbeaten in their last three outings across all competitions since losing 3-1 to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final on October 5.
In fact, Steve Barker's side have only dropped four points in the league following their 2-0 reverse to Arrows on matchday 1, picking up two wins and two draws in the last month.
A 0-0 stalemate with Richards Bay on October 26 lifted Stellies up to fifth spot, two points adrift of the CAF berths and seven behind the league leaders.
Bahlabane Ba Ntwa (14th) will be hoping to have turned the corner after a 1-1 draw with TS Galaxy on October 26 made it four points from their last two games, having halted a three-match losing streak at the start of the season with a 1-0 triumph over AmaZulu on September 28.
Barker wants to keep raising bar after making a better start than they did in 2023-24, which culminated in qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup, where they're reached the group stages.
"Every year, every day in fact, you want to be better," he said. "After five games this season, we probably have more points than we had at the same stage last season, and people forget that we've already played 14 games this season [across all competitions].
"We've won nine of those, drawn three, and lost two... We've raised the bar and I think we are maintaining that level. If we want to be who we want to be, we've got to keep raising the bar and our expectations and demand excellence from everybody day in and day out."
