The
Turffontein meeting originally scheduled for last Saturday was postponed to today, Friday, 18 November. The race times have been changed and the first of 10 races will take place at 14:50. They’ll race into the evening and under lights until 8pm.
Mike de Kock furnished his previews last week, for the full article,
go here, and a shortened version is below:
Race 1, 1160m, RAGSAA: “Well-bred filly. I can’t give much confidence. Ragsaa doesn’t have much pace at home.”
Race 2, 1160m, RED EMPEROR: “Perhaps he’s a bit of a ‘morning glory’, and we can only hope for improvement and place money.”
Race 7, 1600m, BONETE: “Bonete is well-bred and has ability. I hope she comes through this tough test, she is a filly we rate and it’s a really nice race.”
Race 8, 1600m, DEFINITELY MAYBE: “She probably needs to drop a bit more in the ratings, but she’s getting there, warrants consideration. SIMPLE SIMPLE won’t be running.”
Race 9, 1400m, FOREVER MINE: “He’s back to 1400m, he’s best around this distance. He beat William Robertson over 1450m and just got beat by Sparkling Water over same. So he is well suited, but he is best on firm ground.”
Race 10, ARIVIDICIO: “We’ve had to scratch him, injured in his box.”
The highlight of the local racing weekend is the return of last season’s Equus Champion Two-Year-Old colt, Cousin Casey, in the G2 Punters Cup over 1600m at Kenilworth. This most impressive galloper hasn’t raced since the end of July when he posted his fourth successive victory in the Premier’s Champion Stakes. He’ll probably be just below his peak for this run going into the G1 Cape Guineas, but he’s a class act, a standard-setting individual who should be able to win on his comeback despite a few ‘hotties’ among his rivals.
The Listed Sophomore sprint is the day’s back-up feature and there will be a host of the supporters in the camp of Vaughan Marshall’s speedy colt, Trompie, who defeated Hitthemhardsunshine in October’s Need For Speed Sprint over 1000m. But the runner-up was running strongly and gaining some ground late and, back over 1200m, looks set to reverse that result.
Sunday’s return to Scottsville is more of a low-key affair, but the meeting is boosted by the presence of log-leading jockeys Keagan De Melo, Richard Fourie, SManga Khumalo and Muzi Yeni. This is a trappy card for which betting moves on the day itself may be your best guide.
Happy punting!
