2018/19 PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoff
Royal Eagles vs Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila
Chatsworth Stadium, Durban
Wednesday, May 15th
Kick-off at 15:00 (3pm)
Fixture 1
Royal Eagles and Tshakhuma – the teams that finished second and third, respectively, in the National First Division – will square off in the first of six promotion/relegation playoff matches on Wednesday with both teams already eyeing this fixture as an opportunity to get important points on the board early on.
The duo will be joined by Maritzburg United, who finished bottom of the ABSA Premiership, in the series of round robin matches. The Team of Choice have one final lifeline with the winner taking up the last remaining berth in South Africa’s top-flight for the forthcoming campaign.
Stellenbosch United already secured their status for the first time in their history after they clinched the second division title and with-it automatic promotion.

Royal Eagles, hailing from Kwa-Zulu Natal, put their name on the footballing map when they reached the Round of 16 in the Nedbank Cup, losing out to eventual finalists Maritzburg United in a thrilling affair. This season however the league has been very much Eagles’ focus.
After finishing 9
th last time out, not much was expected from the south-coast side, but they surprised many in reaching even this stage, narrowly missing out on automatic promotion on the final day after a 1-0 loss to another surprise package from last season, Ubuntu Cape Town – their first defeat in nine matches.
Royal Eagles recent results:
05/05 – Ubuntu 1-0 Eagles
28/04 – Eagles 3-0 Witbank
20/04 – Eagles 3-1 Ajax CT
Many will remember Tshakhuma as the former Milano United until they sold their second-tier status at the start of the 2017/18 season. Now based in the Limpopo Province, TTM in its infancy, has the chance to add to the clubs rapidly growing reputation by reaching the promised land just two years after forming.
They replicated Eagles success in the cup by reaching the last 16 before bowing out to top-tier outfit Chippa United in February. It has been steady improvement season-on-season for the side who after finishing 14
th as Milano in 2016-17, went on to achieve a 6
th place finish last term. They edged giants Ajax Cape Town to the final playoff spot, by one-goal, after they matched the Urban Warriors result on the final day.
Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila recent results:
05/05 – TTM 2-0 Richards Bay
28/04 – Jomo Cosmos 0-0 TTM
20/04 – TTM 3-0 TS Sporting
The pair played out to a blockbuster 2-2 draw in the corresponding league fixture back in September when Tshakhuma clawed themselves back from 2-0 down in the last couple of minutes of the game to earn a deserved share of the spoils.
Eagles are unbeaten in their last four matches against Tshakhuma since their formation.
Mbulelo Wambi and Dillon Solomons scored midway through each half for the visitors to secure a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture in February – their first win over TTM in three attempts.
All eyes though will be on Philani Cele (Royal Eagles) and Phumelele Bhengu (Tshakhuma) who have bagged 11 goals apiece in the league this season to steer their sides toward the summit.
