Tuesday, 22 May 2018
Kick-off: 18h00 (CAT)
Horoya Athletique Club will face off with Mamelodi Sundowns in the
2018 CAF Champions League Group C match at the Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry on Tuesday.
Kick-off is at 18h00 (CAT).
Nicknamed HAC, Horoya are heading into this encounter having thumped Satellite FC 5-0 away in the Guinean Ligue 1 match last week.
They opened their group stage campaign with a 2-1 win over AS Togo Port away earlier this month. Aboubacar Gal Camara and Daouda Camara netted for Horoya, who are under the guidance of French tactician Victor Zvunka.
As a result, Horoya, who won the 1978 CAF Cup Winners Cup, are placed second on the Group C standings with three points from one match.
Horoya club vice-president Soufiane Souare has called for support ahead of their second Group C match.
“Before I send a message, I will first say that it is a national cause that we defend. Because when you are engaged in a continental competition,” Souare said.
“It is not only the cause of Horoya, but it concerns the whole country. And when you go outside the stadium, it's the flag of Syli that floats.”
“So, I call all Guineans to mobilize massively, on Tuesday, for this match against Mamelodi Sundowns. Because I am convinced that this qualification will be played to a large extent, this Tuesday in Conakry.”
Meanwhile, Sundowns are coming off a 3-1 home defeat against Spanish football heavyweights FC Barcelona in a high profile international friendly match last week.
The South African Absa Premiership champions began their group stage campaign with a 1-1 stalemate with Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca at home earlier this month.
Wydad defender Badr Gaddarine netted an own goal while trying to clear Sibusiso Vilakazi’s cross and draw saw Sundowns move to third place on the Group C standings with one point from game.
Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane says that their game against Barcelona helped the 2016 Champions League winners prepare for their clash with Horoya.
“It’s good preparations for us. We will never stop playing to the best of our ability. I’m happy for the team as they did well. I’m proud of them,” Mosimane said.
“I’m happy we played well we could find our passing patterns. There were times when we did regain the ball and we could also press them to get the ball.”
“Look it was a nice game of football and the quality was there. We were playing against Barcelona and the first two goals, honestly we gifted them and I cannot blame my boys.
“They gave their best and Barcelona gave us a good game. It is good for South African football and for my team.”
Wydad are sitting at the top of Group C table with four points from two games having defeated Togo Port 3-0 at home last week. Togo Port are placed fourth without a single point from two games.
