Matsatsantsa Ready to Retain MTN8 with City Rematch

Supersport United suffered their first defeat since the opening day of the campaign when they were outclassed 3-1 by now table-toppers Orlando Pirates a fortnight ago. Matsatsantsa bounced back brilliantly though, beating Black Leopards 4-0 on Sunday with midfielder James Keene bagging a brace.

Cape Town City are really struggling domestically this season and are without a league win since their opening day success over Supersport United (3 draws, 2 defeats) although manager Benni McCarthy remains hopeful of adding some silverware to their cabinet after claiming impressive scalps in the form of Maritzburg United and Mamelodi Sundowns on route to their second successive MTN8 final.

As the duo prepare for an epic rematch that saw Supersport edge City on 4-2 on penalties in the 2017 edition, following a 1-1 draw after extra-time, to claim their maiden crown. Their respective runs to the 2018 pinnacle have been far from straight-forward with the pair each having to overcome dreaded shootouts in the process. Kaitano Tembo’s men only earned their place courtesy of Ajax Cape Town’s relegation to the National First Division last season and the extra points that were awarded to Matsatsantsa in the process. City on the other hand had to navigate past last season’s surprise package and beaten Nedbank Cup finalists Maritzburg United.

Roland Putsche and Craig Martin’s second-half goals earned City victory over Supersport United on the opening day of the 2018/19 PSL season, ending a run of four games without success against the three-time South African champions.

Thabo Mnyamane was the hero for Matsatsantsa in last year’s final, equalising in the 79th minute following Sibusiso Masina’a opener on 23 minutes. Lyle Lakay and Judas Moseamedi missed their crucial spot-kicks before Dove Wome sent their travelling supporters into wild raptures.

The Cape side still hold vivid memories though of their Telkom Knockout triumph in their debut campaign in 2016 when Aubrey Ngoma and Judas Moseamedi scored either side of Kingston Nkatha’s solitary goal for United to secure the title.
