Premier Soccer League
Supersport United won three consecutive top-flight titles in South Africa between 2007 and 2010 but since then it has been a rather barren run in terms of league success. A pair of
Nedbank Cup triumphs followed, first in 2012 and then again in 2016 with victory in the Telkom Knockout in 2014 sandwiched nicely in between.
2017 saw somewhat of an awakening of the sleeping Supersport giant as they retained the Nedbank Cup whilst adding a first MTN8 crown since 2004 to their collection and while a cup-double is usually something to write home about, it is South Africa’s top prize that the Trendsetters are desperately seeking.
Ahead of their next match in the division – a potential title-decider against bitter local rivals and current league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on April 17
th, just one day after
Bidvest Wits’ top-of-the-table clash with Orlando Pirates – we will be taking a quick look at the team who were real outsiders for the trophy just a couple of weeks ago.
Kaitano Tembo’s side have been quietly going about their business in recent weeks and find themselves just four points adrift of the summit. and could cut the gap between themselves and Sundowns to just one point with a derby-day victory.
The Swanky Boys have picked up five wins from their last seven in the league, adding 15 points from a possible 21 to their tally in the process, with each of their victories seeing them edge their opponent by the odd goal. Defeat at home to Baroka represents their only real blip during this period while Kaizer Chiefs needed a Khama Billiat equaliser to deny Supersport all three points in their last outing.
Mxolisi Machupu opened the scoring just two minutes into their encounter with the Glamour Boys – United’s top scorer for the season netting his seventh goal of the current campaign. The 29-year old South African has now netted in each of Supersport’s last four fixtures as he looks to almost single-handedly spearhead their title charge.
Supersport United recent results:
15/03 – SS United 1-1 Kaizer Chiefs
10/03 – SS United 1-0 FS Stars
03/03 – Chippa 0-1 SS United
23/02 – SS United 1-2 Baroka
They boast one of the most experienced squads in the league featuring players like Bradley Grobler and Reneilwe Letsholonyane, both of whom have turned out for the national team in recent years with the latter apart of South Africa’s 2010 World Cup squad.
They have the joint-second best defence in the division (along with Orlando Pirates) having conceded just 21 goals from their 24 matches thus far. Ronwen Williams in goal has been backed up beautifully by both Clayton Daniels and Morgan Gould just ahead of him on the field, while skipper Dean Furman is vastly experienced on the international stage having spent seven years plying his trade in the United Kingdom.
Throw in the likes of explosive youngsters in the shape of Teboho Mokoena and Aubrey Modiba and you have potentially lethal mix of ingredients capable of taking Supersport United right back to the very top.
