2019 Formula 1 season, Round 6
Monaco Grand Prix
Circuit de Monaco, Monte Carlo
Sunday 26 May 2019
Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship leader Lewis Hamilton will be chasing back-to-back wins when Round 6 of the 2019 season sees the running of the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday 26 May.
Hamilton claimed his third win of the campaign with a dominant race showing at Barcelona earlier this month, with the British driver getting off the line quicker than pole sitter and teammate Valtteri Botas to control the race from the front.
Bottas, despite failing to capitalise on his seemingly superior pace in Spain, is still providing a tough challenge to his more senior stable partner – the Finnish racer is just seven points adrift in a Championship battle which is increasingly looking to be a Mercedes dominated one.
The ‘Silver Arrows’ have racked up an unprecedented five straight 1-2 finishes and hold a commanding lead over second-placed Ferrari in the Constructors’ table.
Yet if there is a track where Mercedes could be beaten, it is Monaco: the tight and twisty layout has not suited their cars in the past couple of years, allowing Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) and Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull, but now with Renault) to claim victories in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
In addition, Monaco has not often been a happy hunting ground for Hamilton – he has a massive 76 Formula 1 race wins in his career, but just two have arrived on the streets of Monte Carlo: 2008 and 2016.
