Chiefs brought up a fourth league match without a win this campaign when they were held 0-0 by 10-man Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on August 17.
The Amakhosi’s only home league game so far this season saw them suffer a 3-1 loss at the hands of Bidvest Wits, with Leonardo Castro’s goal proving to be no more than a consolation for the Soweto giants.
Celtic claimed a third straight win at the start of the season and joined Bidvest Wits at the top of the table with a 1-0 home victory over Orlando Pirates on August 19, secured by a goal from Bongani Sam.
Phunya Sele Sele’s only other away game so far this term saw them claim an impressive 2-0 win at Golden Arrows on August 8, thanks to goals from Tshegofatso Magaso and Kabelo Dlamini.
In head-to-head terms, Celtic and Chiefs have met in 61 league matches since 1985, with the Soweto giants claiming 33 wins compared to 10 for their Bloemfontein counterparts, while 18 games have been drawn. The Amakhosi have won 23 of their 31 home league matches in the rivalry, suffering just two defeats in the process.
Last season the teams cancelled each other out, drawing 1-1 in Bloemfontein and 0-0 in the return game in Soweto. In fact, four of the teams’ last five league meetings have ended in stalemates, while their last 10 league clashes have produced just nine goals.
Chiefs’ line-up from their 0-0 draw with Maritzburg on August 17: Khune, Mphahlele, Ngezana, Cardoso, Ntiya-Ntiya (Tshabalala 76'), Katsande, Mahlasela (Moon 59'), Ntshangase, Ekstein, Billiat, Castro (Parker 87').
Celtic’s line-up from their 1-0 win over Pirates on August 19: Tignyemb, Sam, Rikhotso, Ndengane, Mabena (Letsoalo 76’), Mashikinya, Potsane, Gordinho, Dlamini (De Jongh 69’), Phalane, Mabasa (Baloyi 57’).
