Lewis Hamilton set to make history at Canadian Grand Prix

2018 Canadian Grand Prix

Formula 1, Round 7

10 June 2018 – 20h10 CAT
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal

Lewis Hamilton will look to make yet more history in his Formula 1 career when he chases victory at the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. The race will be hosted at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, beginning at 20h10 CAT on Sunday, 10 June.

Hamilton comes into the seventh round of the season leading the Drivers’ Championship by 14 points from Sebastian Vettel. The British driver will back his chances of winning in Montreal for a fourth successive year and a seventh time overall – this would see him join Michael Schumacher as the only person to win seven times or more at a single event (the great German achieved the feat in Canada (7) and France (8)).

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is very much a ‘power’ track, which should see Mercedes bounce back to dominance after trailing Red Bull and Ferrari at the Monaco GP last month. Daniel Ricciardo claimed a famous win in the streets of the principality, but his chances of a second straight victory have been severely hampered by the news that he will face engine-related grid penalties this weekend. RBR may turn their focus on trying to get Max Verstappen back to form at a track where he should have ample opportunity to demonstrate his overtaking skills.

That leaves Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel as the most likely challenger to Hamilton, though the German has won in Canada just once (2013) and the Scuderia last tasted victory on the streets of Montreal way back in 2004 when Schumacher was on his way to his seventh and final World Championship. In fact, Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas will have ambitions of ousting Ferrari and completing a second successive 1-2 for Mercedes at the Canadian GP.

Other notable aspects to keep an eye out for this weekend include upgraded engine packages for both Renault and Honda (who provide power units for Toro Rosso),Haas looking to bounce back after a dreadful weekend at Monaco, and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso believes Montreal’s unpredictable weather could throw up some drama in Sunday’s race.
