1st of 5-match T20 international series

The West Indies will be aiming to exact revenge on South Africa by claiming a T20 international series win in Grenada, following defeat to their visitors in a two-match Test series.

The Proteas claimed comfortable wins in back-to-back Test matches hosted at the Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium in St Lucia earlier this month and will be aiming to conclude their trip to Caribbean on a high.

Kieron Pollard is set to captain a strong West Indies squad which includes big-hitting all-rounder Andre Russell and 41-year-old Chris Gayle. Other notable names include Dwayne Bravo, Fidel Edwards, Andre Fletcher and Jason Holder.

"We have assembled a very solid squad - with experienced world-class match-winners and some exciting young talented players, ready to explode onto the global stage and do great things for West Indies cricket," said Windies coach Phil Simmons.

South Africa will take confidence from the way they played in the Test series, but know all too well that the West Indies are a different force in the shorter format of the game.

Temba Bavuma will captain a Proteas team that includes an in-form Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada and Tabraiz Shamsi, who currently sits top of the T20I bowling rankings.

"It's not a relief. There's been a lot of hard work that's been done behind the scenes," Proteas coach Mark Boucher told reporters following their first away Test series victory since 2017. "We were working on quite a few technical things and upskilling our players. When you have got a young team, the best place for them to learn to play cricket is in foreign conditions.

"This is how you develop players, in different conditions, and this is how they learn about their games and the slight little adjustments that can make them into world class players."

The upcoming fixtures will serve as continued preparation for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup set to get underway in India in October. The West Indies are the defending champions.
