The local racing highlight this weekend is a standalone meeting on the standside track at
Turffontein which is likely to enjoy a good Pick 6 pool. There are two factors that could ensure a bumper Pick payout: competitive mid-winter fields and lower division handicaps. There are a few legs in this Pick 6 that may require ‘Field’ as an option, and it may be wise to take a few Jackpots to cover your Pick 6.
You can play all the exotics via the Betway tote portal, and in doing so you’ll receive your 6% betting tax back into your Betway account at month-end. That’s always a welcome bonus to kickstart every new month.
Also on the racing menu this weekend is some excellent Group action from Newmarket on Friday and Saturday, and a Group 1 race from France on Saturday. To have a chance of winning serious cash, you must have a ticket. Don’t get left!
Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock has two runners at the Turffontein meeting. Officer in Command and Volare E Mambo will face the starter in Race 5 over 1600m. They have been tipped 1-2 by Computaform, but Mike advised caution and said: “They are both well exposed. They’re in the right type of race, both have eachway chances but neither are bankers. Officer in Command was coming along the right way but his saddle slipped during his last run. He was not persisted with, so that run can be ignored. He is drawn wide this time and that is a concern. Volare E Mambo looks best suited to 1600m, she is doing well and should be thereabouts, but runners like Thunee Playa, Chestnut Bomber and American Biscuit also make some appeal.”
Trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren’s smart six-time winner, Chyavana, looks the right choice and is a potential Pick 6 banker in Race 7, the GG Gaming Middle Stakes over 1160m. He should continue to frank the form of a race won by the now retired sprinting star Thunderstruck on 18 May, which has already produced a fluent subsequent winner in Trompie.
With two Group wins to his name this season, including The Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, trainer Kevin Ryan’s hat-trick seeking sprinter, Inisherin, will take a power of beating in the Group 1 My Pension Expert July Cup Stakes over 1200m on the July course on Saturday. The supporting feature is the Group 2 bet365 Superlative Stakes in which Charlie Appleby’s Dubawi colt, Ancient Wisdom, takes his first step up to stakes company. He is unbeaten in two starts and expected to rise to the occasion.
The Kenilworth race meeting scheduled for Saturday has been postponed to Monday, 15 July.
