11 Round

2022 Austrian Grand Prix

Red Bull Ring
Spielberg, Austria
Sunday, 10 July 2022

Max Verstappen will be determined to make history by becoming the first driver to win the Austrian Grand Prix a record four times.

The Red Bull Racing-RBPT driver dominated last year's Austrian Grand Prix from start to finish and he deservedly won the event.

However, Verstappen couldn't secure a podium finish in the most recent race in the 2022 season as he finished seventh at the British Grand Prix on July 3.

The Belgian-Dutch star started well but after pitting with a suspected puncture, Verstappen struggled for pace for the remaining 37 laps of the race and he eventually finished in seventh place.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr won the British with Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton finishing second and third respectively.

Looking at the 2022 Drivers' Championship standings, Red Bull-Racing driver Max Verstappen remains at the top of the table and he is followed by Perez and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari respectively.

Verstappen will be eager to extend his lead at the top of the standings by clinching the Austrian Grand Prix where he has enjoyed a lot of success - winning three of the last events.

“Once I got into the lead, after Carlos made the mistake, a few corners later in turn five there was a piece of carbon," Verstappen said as he reflected on his performance at the British Grand Prix.

"But by the time I was there it was on the racing line – I could not drastically move left or right. I tried to just hit it head on, but instead it just went into my floor and it just destroyed everything. It felt like a puncture, because suddenly I had no balance, a lot of oversteer and the car was hopping a lot.

“Of course I hope for more, but it’s just really unlucky what happened today. I just never give up and just tried to do the best I could and still tried to score points," he continued.

“It was a good, hard, but fair battle, I think. I knew Mick was going to give it all to go for seventh, but it was all right. It was a bit of a struggle for me to hang in there, but luckily it worked out.”

Red Bull Racing-RBPT are placed at the top of the Constructors' Championship standings and they are followed by Ferrari and Mercedes respectively.
