Royal London Series 2022
One Day International Format
2nd ODI
England v South Africa
Old Trafford
Manchester, England
Friday, 22 July 2022
England will be looking to bounce back in the Royal London Series when they take on South Africa in the second
One-Day International at Old Trafford on Friday, July 22.
The world champions were comprehensively beaten by the Proteas in the first ODI at Chester-le-Street in searing conditions on Tuesday, in what was Ben Stokes' last outing in limited overs cricket.
The tourists batted first and posted a record-high 333 for five on English soil, with Rassie van der Dussen getting a career-best 133, while Janneman Malan (57) and Aiden Markram (77) scored half-centuries.
England could only manage 271 in reply as they lost by 62 runs. Joe Root was the pick of their batters with 86 runs and Anrich Nortje starred with the ball for South Africa, taking 4/53 in 8.5 overs.
Stokes, who announced his retirement from ODI's on the eve of the match, contributed just five runs on his home ground after struggling with the ball as well - his five overs costing 44 runs.
Commenting on how Stokes' decision to retire will impact the team, skipper Jos Buttler said: "It certainly feels like a little bit of the changing of the times for us.
"We have to rebuild but at the same time we have fantastic players and others waiting to come back so I am very confident in the team.
"We're probably moving through a bit of a transition phase with Eoin [Morgan] going and Ben going. That's the natural cycle of teams.
"We have to find ways to give people opportunities to replace those guys. It presents chances for others to step up in different roles and take more responsibility."

Van der Dussen acknowledged that it was important to get their tour off to a winning start, but is aware there is still plenty of cricket left to play as the Proteas look for their first white-ball series success in England.
"It's obviously a massive result for us, but in saying that, it's only one match of a long tour," he said. "Recovery is going to be important now for the guys that were in the field.
"We have a game in the next few days. The physical work has been put in, and now it's all about resetting on Friday."
