Everton head into matches against Leicester City and Newcastle this week having won five of their last six matches and are amongst several teams within touching distance of the league summit.

In stark contrast, the Magpies are on a five-game losing streak in the league following a 2-1 loss at home to Leeds United on Tuesday evening. Newcastle are winless in nine matches and perilously close to the relegation zone.

"You need a performance - and we've been short, there is no disputing that - but we've had awful injury problems, illness," Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce told the BBC following their latest defeat.

"I don't like making excuses but I don't think since the start of the season I've played what I think is my strongest team. If we keep performances like that we will be OK.

"That's the best we've played in weeks. It was good to see the forward players on the pitch to make that possible for us.

"We had 20-odd shots, we hit the bar and we were unfortunate we didn't score more but we have to go back again tomorrow and get ready for the weekend."

The Toffees suffered a 2-1 defeat away to United in the reverse fixture at St James' Park earlier this season with Callum Wilson bagging a brace for the hosts on Tyneside. Newcastle scored twice in the 90th minute to hold Everton to a 2-2 in the corresponding fixture at Goodison Park last season.
