2018 Belgian Grand Prix
Formula 1, Round 13
26 August 2018 – 15h10 CAT
Circuit de Spa Francorchamps
The 2018 Formula 1 season will resume after a summer break of almost a month when the World Championship moves to the famous Circuit de Spa Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix.
Simply known as Spa, the circuit is the longest and arguably most beloved of all venues on the Formula 1 calendar and often produces thrilling races. With huge elevation changes, some of motorsport’s most famous corners and plenty of places to overtake, the Belgian Grand Prix is rarely forgettable.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton will be chasing his fourth victory at Spa and a third from the last four seasons. In 2017 he won from pole position, beating Sebastian Vettel into second place and turning the tide of the drivers’ championship in his favour.
This year the British driver comes to Spa with a healthy 24-point lead over his German arch rival, having won at the German and Hungarian Grands Prix despite his Mercedes being second-best in outright speed to the Ferraris.
The Silver Arrows and Scuderia should be closely matched in Belgium, while Red Bull’s lack of outright grunt could cost them the chance to push drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen into the top four.
The Formula 1 world is still digesting two major pieces of news which stole the headlines during the summer break: Ricciardo’s announcement that he will be leaving Red Bull for Renault in 2019 and Fernando Alonso’s decision to retire from the series at the end of the season.
Renault’s Carlos Sainz will replace Alonso at McLaren, while Pierre Gasly is likely to be promoted from Toro Rosso to take Ricciardo’s seat at Red Bull.
