Fabio Quartararo will look to hang onto his riders’ championship lead when the 2020 MotoGP season heads to Round 10, the Aragon Grand Prix in Spain on Sunday 18 October.

The French Yamaha rider tops the championship with 115 points – 10 and 18 points ahead of nearest chasers, Joan Mir (Suzuki) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) respectively. Quartararo managed only a ninth-place finish from pole position at the French Grand Prix this past weekend.

The 21-year-old struggled to adapt to the wet conditions at Le Mans, with Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci claiming a famous and deserved win. Quartararo had to scrap hard for his ninth-place finish, narrowly edging out championship rivals Maverick Vinales and Mir in a three-way battle in the final laps.

"That fight for ninth position was like a fight for victory!" said Quartararo. "It was fun and everyone gave 100 percent. Some people said nobody wants to win this championship, but we showed everybody wants to win it!"

Quartararo added, "I think it's the first time in a race that I'm thinking about the championship. When Joan overtook me I said 'no way'. I will not finish without trying something. I braked so hard in Turn 9 and overtook him, pushed him a little bit wide but I was also wide because I was over the limit. It was quite fun, I would prefer to finish at the front but this was quite a great overtake."

The Frenchman finished fifth at the Aragon Grand Prix in 2019, but will be hoping for a better showing this time around as he looks to hold onto top spot in a roller-coaster world championship battle.
