England claimed impressive victories in the first two matches of the series – winning by three wickets and 38 runs in London and Cardiff respectively – but in the third match, at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday, they absolutely destroyed Australia.
Eoin Morgan’s side batted first and posted a world-record ODI score of 481/6 in their 50 overs – featuring 139 (off 92 balls) from Jonny Bairstow and 147 (92) from Alex Hales, as well as quick half-centuries from Jason Roy and Morgan himself.
In response the tourists were all out for 239, suffering their heaviest ever defeat (in terms of runs) in an ODI, falling 242 runs short of their target.
The defeat was a new low for Australia, who are still in recovery from the ball tampering scandal which rocked their cricket earlier this year. In ODI terms, they have now lost five ODI series in succession and eight of their last nine ODIs against England. Overall, they have won only two of their last 16 ODIs against all opponents.
Australia captain Tim Paine said the heavy defeat on Tuesday was the “hardest day’s cricket” he has had in his life, and admitted his team will need to raise their game in all aspects if they are to bounce back and at least get a consolation victory or two in the series.
As for Morgan and his side, their challenge is to keep up their intensity and aim for a new goal: no England team has whitewashed Australia 5-0 in an ODI series – they could make history if they win at the Riverside Ground and the final match in Manchester on Sunday.
