There are four Jackpot One carryovers of R250,000 each going to meetings around the country this weekend. Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock has just a single moderate runner at
HWB Greyville tonight. He is Irish Anthem (Race 2, 2300m) - trying more ground and in with a Quartet chance. So we’ll focus on the Jackpot bets at the Vaal meeting on Saturday and HWB Kenilworth on Sunday. You can bet into the Jackpot One carryover pools (R1-million expected for each), via the Betway Tote portal.
Trainer Fabian Habib has made the notable jockey booking of Richard Fourie for his runners in the two Vaal features. Fourie is on Captainofthegreeen in the R500,000 WSB Grand Heritage (Race 7, 1475m) and aboard Confederate in the Grand Heritage Consolation (Race 8, 1475). That the champion jockey seldom rides for the Vaal trainer is significant – his engagement here means that Habib expects to go close in both races and has acquired the best services available.
Captainofthegreen has excellent form this season with three successive wins and his form has been well franked. He has drawn near the standside rail, which most Vaal punters believe holds an advantage, and his proven versatility will come into play over the tricky distance of 1475m.
There are several other runners with chances in both races, however. Captainofthegreen’s principal dangers are Radicchio and The Africa House, who fought out the finish of their most recent encounter at this track; and Pomodoro’s Jet, who is probably a length or two better than his rating and comes into the race on favourable terms.
In the consolation race, Count Invicto presents a formidable challenge to Confederate on his exposed form, while Warhawk Bomber was unlucky not to have made the final field in the main race and has prospects of landing the odds, too.
If budget allows it, you’ll need to have a wide spread of runners in the first two legs of Jackpot One, where Thunee Playa makes most appeal after the scratching of Good Council in Race 5 over 2000m and Swing Upon A Star is the favourite in Race 6 (1100m). Here is a suggested Jackpot One Perm for the Vaal: 1,3,5,6 x 2,3,4,5,6,8,9 x 12,13,14,19 x 3,4,5,7. (R448).
There are 20 runners carded for the R500,000 Grade 2 De Grendel Cape Merchants at HWB Kenilworth on Sunday – an open contest, much like the Grand Heritage. In narrowing down, the race looks within the capabilities of handily weighted and lightly raced Meu Capitano, but there is plenty of speed around him and Surjay, Seeking The Stars, At My Command and King Of The Gauls are four of several others in with winning chances.
The potential banker for Jackpot One is Dawn Till Dusk (Race 6, 1600m), who is a three-year-old on the upgrade, enjoys a low weight for this contest and represents the Justin Snaith-JP van der Merwe combination, three times in the winner’s box at the midweek meeting.
Another Snaith runner, Bounceback, could open the Jackpot on a high note for punters. He looks ready to win and his deep draw should not be too concerning. Jockeys have steered their mounts to the outside of the track in races around the bend at Kenilworth recently, which negates the outside draw disadvantage.
In Race 8, Snaith and Fourie could strike again with Swiatek, who found her top gear late in her previous start and placed second over the course and distance. A repeat performance will see her feature in the judge’s photo, especially since the form of her main rival All Is Green wasn’t franked when The Charleston ran unplaced earlier this week. Here is a suggested Jackpot perm for Kenilworth: 1,6,11 x 1,9,10 x 2,4,13,14,15,17,19 x 2,4,6. (R189).
