Sunday, 8 December 2024
Charles Leclerc will be eager to become the first Ferrari driver to win the
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and also secure the runner-up spot in the 2024 Formula One World Championship.
Most recent race
The Ferrari Driver Academy graduate was at his best at the Qatar Grand Prix on 1 December, the most recent race in the 2024 Formula One World Championship season.
Leclerc started on the fifth grid and managed to pass several cars which saw him finish as the runner-up, while also fifth in the sprint event which saw him accumulate a total of 22 points from the race.
Formula One title ambitions
The Monte Carlo-born racing driver is still placed in the third spot on the World Drivers' Championship standings having accumulated 341 points.
Leclerc is eight points behind second-placed Lando Norris of McLaren, while leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing has already been crowned this season's champion.
Why Leclerc could win the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Finishing second at the Qatar Grand Prix and ahead of his main rival, Norris has boosted the former Prema Racing driver's confidence coming into the UAE.
Leclerc, who finished second in last year's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, will be keen to go one step further and win this weekend's race.
What did he say?
"We expected this to be a difficult weekend for us so I’m happy with how the race went today, having made up some points on McLaren," Leclerc said after the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix.
"We had some luck on my side and a bit less on Carlos (Sainz Jr)’s with the puncture. We may have been able to finish second and third had it not been for that, which is a shame teamwise, but overall, it was positive to be this competitive here.
"Driving for such an iconic team as Ferrari, it would be amazing for us to finish the season by bringing the constructors’ title back to Maranello. It won’t be easy to score the points we need to win the title in a single weekend, but everything is still possible and we will do absolutely everything to achieve it."
