China have enjoyed unparalleled success in table tennis since it was introduced to the
Olympic Games in 1988 and they are favourites to come out on top again at Paris 2024.
Of the 37 gold medals on offer at the Games, 32 have been won by China as part of an impressive haul of 60 in total, including 20 silver and 8 bronze.
Much like badminton, the bat-and-ball sport is dominated by the Asian countries, with South Korea (18) second in the medal table followed by Japan (8).
China have topped the medal count at every tournament since 1988, which was the only year they didn't win at least one medal in an event - the men's singles in Seoul.
Tokyo 2020 men's singles and team champion Ma Long is back to defend his latter title alongside Fan Zhendong, while Chen Meng, Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu are hoping to repeat their triumphs in the women's events.
Ma was named as one of the flag bearers at the opening ceremony of this year's Olympics and China's captain is bidding to set a new Games record after winning five gold medals already.
"It is not my personal pride, but the glory to our table tennis team through generations. Table tennis is not just a sport, but also a kind of story and a song of long-time dedication," the 35-year-old said.
"Taking over the relay baton from our predecessors, I would like to carry on the glory of Chinese table tennis team and carry forward the Olympic spirit as well as the Chinese table tennis and sports spirit to Paris."
