Max Verstappen will be determined to become the first driver to win four successive Japanese Grand Prix titles in the history of the race.

Most recent race

The Red Bull Racing driver failed to secure a podium spot at the Chinese Grand Prix on 23 March, the second race in the 2025 Formula One World Championship season.

Verstappen started on the fourth grid and went on to finish fourth, but he finished third in the sprint event following an exciting race in Shanghai.

Formula One title ambitions

The former Toro Rosso driver is placed second in the World Drivers' Championship standings and is currently on 36 points.

Verstappen is eight points behind leader, Lando Norris of McLaren coming into the highly-anticipated Japanese Grand Prix.

Why Verstappen could win the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix

In 2024, Verstappen became the second driver to win three successive Japanese Grand Prix races after Michael Schumacher, who won the race between 2000 and 2002.

The 27-year-old, who has achieved 63 race wins, is the clear favourite to win this weekend's race and go level with Sebastian Vettel on four Japanese Grand Prix victories.

What did he say?

“That was at least enjoyable - trying to catch the cars ahead, having a bit of a fight as well," Verstappen said after finishing fourth at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix.

“I think we’ll take that as a positive, that there is pace in the car at some point. We just need to understand a bit more why it didn’t happen at the beginning and why at the end of the race it was a bit better.”

“It’s positive and better than expected after that first stint of the race. "We’ll take that, analyse everything from the weekend and hopefully in Japan we can be a bit more competitive.”
