2024/25 Betway Premiership - Matchday 2

2024/25 Betway Premiership
Matchday 2

21 September 2024

With four teams being involved in CAF competitions this coming weekend, there are just four games taking place in the Betway Premiership, all of them on Saturday, 21 September.

The day's action gets underway with a clash between Golden Arrows and Marumo Gallants at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale.

Dan Malesela will be searching for his first points since returning to the helm after Bahlabane Ba Ntwa suffered a 2-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in Bloemfontein on the opening weekend.

Sekela Sithole had given Gallants an eighth-minute lead, but Mduduzi Shabalala quickly hit back for Amakhosi on 17 minutes before Mfundo Vilakazi completed the comeback win 11 minutes from time.

Malesela felt his team deserved at least a point against Chiefs and believes they are headed in the right direction.

"The good thing about us is we can see where we are going... there's a sense of direction. On a different day, we'd be able to deal with many teams," he said.

"The sad part is that we lost... the worst-case scenario we should have got a draw. I really think we deserve to win somehow."

Richards Bay also have a new man in charge as Brandon Truter began his tenure with a 1-0 win over TS Galaxy on September 15.

Keegan Allan's 22nd-minute goal settled the contest in Durban and Truter will be hoping to maintain his perfect record when the Natal Rich Boys take on Chippa United at the Buffalo City Stadium in the late kick-off.

Truter was encouraged by the performance of his players against the Rockets and believes there is a structure in place at the club for their situation to improve dramatically this season.

"Look, it was our first game and I maintain it is a coachable group. It's a group that knows how to fight, during pre-season we used two different playing styles," he said.

"The structure is good, clean sheet in our first game, so we have to build on this going forward and I'm happy with what I'm seeing now. There is much to look forward to here."

Earlier in the day, Polokwane City will be looking to build on their opening-day win when they tackle newly-promoted Magesi at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Rise And Shine battled back from a goal down to beat AmaZulu 2-1 at the same venue on September 14 courtesy of goals at the end of each half from Bulelani Nikani (45+4') and Tholo Matuludi (90+1').

Phuti Mohafe's side are in a three-way tie with Chiefs (1st) and Richards Bay (3rd) at the top of the table ahead of the midweek matches.

Later that same afternoon, Royal AM face another stern test when they travel to the TUT Stadium for an encounter with title hopefuls SuperSport United.

Thwihli Thwahla kicked got their campaign underway with a solid point after holding cape Town City to a 1-1 draw in Pietermaritzburg, where Motebang Sera (84') cancelled out Prins Tjiueza' eighth-minute opener.
