Round-robin

14-15 January 2023

The inaugural SA 20 season will be in full swing this weekend when the six teams continue to battle it out for the three playoff places.

First up on Saturday, Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape go head to head at Centurion Park, just two days after their first meeting.

Later on that same afternoon, MI Cape Town play host to Joburg Super Kings at Newlands.

Simon Katich's team kicked off proceedings on Tuesday when they beat Western Cape rivals Paarl Royals by eight wickets in the Mother City.

The visitors posted 142/7 in 20 overs, with Jos Buttler their top scorer after hitting 51 runs off 42 balls, while Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/27 from his four overs.

In reply, MI Cape Town reached the target with 27 balls to spare as Dewald Brevis lead the way with an unbeaten 70 runs off 41 deliveries.

Commenting on their opening-day victory, captain Rashid Khan said: "So happy to be starting the new competition with a win. The way we started was great, and then we finished off with our batting.

"Looking forward to keeping this momentum. The bowling unit we have is one of the best. As a captain it makes it so easy because you have bowlers who can bowl in different stages. We just need to focus on doing the right things."

Then on Sunday, Durban's Super Giants welcome Paarl Royals to Kingsmead in the only match of the day.

Lance Klusener's men started the competition with a loss to Joburg Super Kings by 16 wickets in Durban on Wednesday.

The Gauteng outfit batted first and Donovan Ferreira starred with a bat, scoring 82 off just 42 balls in their total of 190/6.

The hosts were restricted to 174/5 in 20 overs, although skipper Quinton de Kock put up a valiant effort at the crease, hitting 78 runs off 52 balls.

Royals skipper David Miller admits their performance in Cape Town wasn't good enough and insists they need to improve in many areas.

"Not a good start from us," Miller declared. "I think it was a little bit tough when we batted up front. It got a little easier as it went on. They batted really well and put us under pressure.

"Our execution was not great either. We slipped up in a few areas and we will have to learn from those areas. There were two dropped catches which is never good in a T20 competition."
