New Zealand v South Africa

25 February - 1 March 2022

South Africa will be looking to bounce back from a humiliating defeat to New Zealand when they meet in the second Test in Christchurch starting on February 25.

The Proteas lost the first Test by an innings and 276 runs at the same venue last week and they will have to improve in all departments to avoid a first-ever series defeat to the Black Caps.

Dean Elgar and company were bowled out for a record-low 95 runs in the first innings and could only manage 111 in the second innings as Matt Henry and Tim Southee tore them apart.

Henry picked up a career-best 7/23 in the first innings, while Southee shined in the second innings with figures of 5/35.

The Kiwis posted an impressive 482 in their first innings, with Henry Nicholls reaching his eighth century before being dismissed for 105 runs, while Tom Blundell made 96.

Mark Boucher's men dropped three catches on day one and another four on day two, and Elgar admits they didn't do the basics right.

"We were outskilled in all three departments and failed to execute the basics," the South African skipper said.

"Not a very good showing considering what we built up prior to this series. I don't like to use [10 days of quarantine] as an excuse.

"A lot went wrong. Not a lot went right. We should be a hell of a lot more competitive. Clearly what we produced out there over the last few days is not reflective of us as a squad."

New Zealand coach Gary Stead paid tribute to his bowlers for setting up victory in the first Test and he highlighted the performance of Henry, who took nine wickets in the match.

"He's always been a good bowler and sometimes you need that opportunity to strike and make the most it," Stead said.

"He bowled beautifully throughout the Test but I thought the whole bowling unit bowled really well together and thought that was one of the reasons we were so convincing."
