Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama will be looking to emulate Tiger Woods by winning the 2022 Masters Tournament.

No player has won the Masters in consecutive years since American icon Woods accomplished the feat in 2001-2002 and Matsuyama is hoping to change this.

The Japanese star finished with an overall score of 278 (−10), one shot ahead of runner-up Will Zalatoris and he clinched the title last year.

By winning the Masters, Matsuyama became both the first Japanese player and the first Asian-born player to win the tournament.

The Sendai-born golfer then lifted the 2021 Zozo Championship in his home country as he won by five strokes over Cameron Tringale and Brendan Steele.

Matsuyama started 2022 by winning the Sony Open in Hawaii after he made an eagle on the first extra hole to claim a win with Russel Henley finishing second.

The 30-year-old has struggled with injuries in recent months having withdrawn from the Players Championship, WGC-Match Play and Valero Texas Open, but he is now fit to defend his crown at Augusta.

"Looking forward to returning to Augusta National," Matsuyama said as he looks to retain the Masters' title.

"I really hope I play well. There are some expectations from myself, whether it's pressure or not. The same with the Champions Dinner.

"I don't speak English very well and so it's kind of a two-sided coin," the eight-time PGA Tour winner added.

I'm looking forward to it, of course, to be with all those great past Masters champions, but at the same time, too, very nervous about the speech I will be giving."
