2020-21 DStv Premiership
Matchday 11 of 30
16-17 January 2021
The Tshwane Derby between SuperSport United and defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns will headline this weekend's round of
2020-21 DStv Premiership action.
Matsatsantsa boast the league's leading scorer in Bradley Grobler in their ranks and along with Swallows are geared to be Sundowns' biggest rivals in the battle for league honours this season.
The Brazilians are one of three teams yet to lose a game this season and currently lead the way having accumulated 24 points from 10 matches. Swallows FC, who haven't lost a game across two divisions since football returned in August, kept their unbeaten start intact with a 1-1 draw away to Orlando Pirates last weekend.
The defending GladAfrica Championship champions are away to a Baroka FC side who have lost three of their last four matches on Saturday. Also yet to lose a game this season is Golden Arrows. Abafana Bes’thende have drawn six of their nine matches, but considering they ended last season on a nine-game winless run it has been a remarkable turnaround by the KwaZulu-Natal club.
Staying in KZN, Benni McCarthy and Ernst Middendorp will renew their coaching rivalry when AmaZulu host a confident Maritzburg United. The Team of Choice have won their last two games to rise off the bottom of the league standings and head into the KZN Derby fresh off a 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs.
It might not be a derby, but Saturday's match between TS Galaxy and Chippa United could have the making of one as Dan Malesela returns to Mbombela Stadium a few weeks after being sacked as Rockets head coach.
Malesela is back with the Chilli Boys for his fourth stint at the club after being let go by Galaxy just before Christmas last year.
"I hate this thing about grudge matches, I don't have any issue with Galaxy," said Malesela. "I just want to do my job here and get the desired results here. I am not one that holds grudges. I can be disappointed at a particular time, but in a short space of time I recover."
Former Highlands Park head coach Owen da Gama has since been unveiled as Galaxy's new head coach and he will be eager to lead them to what would only be their second win of the campaign.
“I come a long way with [Galaxy President] Tim [Sukazi] and when I looked at the ambition of the club, I was really attracted to TS Galaxy," said Da Gama. "They won the Nedbank Cup while in the GladAfrica Championship, it showed that there is a lot of ambition in this team and Tim wants to take the club to greater heights.
"I really want to be part of this team. I want to take this challenge and I’m confident that we will turn things around."
Last season's runners-up Kaizer Chiefs will take on a free-scoring Cape Town City on Saturday eager to climb away from the relegation zone, but will have to do so without Khama Billiat who has been ruled out of action for the next two months with a leg injury.
Pirates are in Thohoyandou for back-to-back games this week as they aim to reignite their title charge. The Buccaneers will take aim at bottom of the table Black Leopards on Sunday.
