2022/23 English Premier League

Matchday 8

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester City

Molineux
Wolverhampton, England
Saturday, 17 September 2022
Kick-off is at 13h30

Manchester City will target a return to winning ways in the Premier League when they travel to the Black Country to take on Wolves on Saturday, September 17.

The Citizens have made a stuttering start to their title defence after dropping points against Newcastle and Aston Villa, while shipping six goals already in their opening six games.

However, Pep Guardiola's side remain unbeaten in the league and trail early leaders Arsenal by a single point in second place following a 1-1 draw at Villa last time out.

Jack Grealish is back in the mix after he returned from injury to feature in the 4-0 win over Sevilla last week and Guardiola is pleased to have the midfielder available again following his four-game absence.

"We thought about it at one-zero [against Villa] but he trained just two days," the Spaniard said when asked if Grealish had been in line to face his former club.

"If we had scored two, for sure we would have had him in. Jack started the season really well and we need players so it's good to have him back."

Wanderers finally halted a five-match winless run in the league when they beat Southampton 1-0 at Molineux on September 3, courtesy of a Daniel Podence goal.

Bruno Lage's team are now undefeated in their last three outings since going down 1-0 to Tottenham on August 20 and they sit 14th in the standings, having collected six points from their opening six fixtures.

Podence stressed the importance of building up a head of steam now after results didn't quite go their way in the first month of the campaign.

"It's a very important win because we had a few games, not bad games, but not scoring, not winning," the Portuguese winger said.

"One-nil, we didn't concede, we had a very solid performance and we scored, so we're very happy and have to build on it now."
