2024/25 English Premier League
Matchday 11
Liverpool v Aston Villa
Anfield
Liverpool, England
Saturday, 9 November 2024
Kick-off is at 22h00

Premier League leaders Liverpool will attempt to keep the momentum going when they welcome Aston Villa to Anfield on Saturday, November 9 in the late kick-off.

The Reds returned to the summit after they came from an early goal down to beat Brighton 2-1 at home on November 2, having dropped two points in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal six days earlier.

Arne Slot's side opened up a two-point gap to Manchester City, who saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end with a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Arsenal slipped up yet again after they lost 1-0 to Newcastle in the early kick-off on November 2 to get pushed down to fifth place, with Nottingham Forest and Chelsea moving up to third and fourth positions respectively.

The Villans suffered their first defeat in eight games with the 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham on November 3, although they have found wins harder to come by recently.

Unai Emery's side have picked up just six points from their last five outings and find themselves seven points adrift of the Merseyside giants in sixth spot, level with the Gunners and the Blues on 18 points.

The hosts could have Ibrahima Konate available for selection despite taking a knock to his arm against the Seagulls, but Alisson (thigh), Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott (ankle) and Diogo Jota (chest) are all ruled out.

Ross Barkley is the only confirmed absentee for the visitors, with Morgan Rogers and Matty Cash (calf) still being assessed.

Slot was buoyed by the fact that his team managed to fight back once more to get a result against Albion, although he doesn't believe they have gained an advantage over their title rivals.

No [I don't see a big opportunity opening up], not because of the fact that they (Arsenal and Manchester City) lost. But what I do like a lot is that last week, two times we came one goal behind against Arsenal, 1-0 and 2-1, and two times we were able to fight ourselves back into the game," the Dutchman said.

"And in this game we were 1-0 down at half-time, which I think we deserved, and then to come back so strong against such a quality team that has spent so much money in recent years as well, led by a few very good managers in the last few years, then to come back the way we did gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season."

Emery expressed his disappointment that Villa failed to build on their performance in the first half against Spurs and has urged his players to rediscover the consistency from last season.

"We are frustrated and disappointed, but we played a very fantastic first half," the Spaniard said. "We were taking advantage and in the second half we were in the same idea.

"They scored one goal and they were pushing more. Even like that, we had our chances to score the second goal, but the match was completely different when they scored the second goal.

"Now is the time to get balance and to keep going. There are 38 days and we are going to play 38 matches and to be consistent in 38 matches is the most important.

"Today we lost one opportunity here against Tottenham. We are in our way and we will try to get up quick... and keep going."
