2023/24 English Premier League
Matchday 38
Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Anfield

Kick-off is at 17h00

Liverpool will be looking to give Jurgen Klopp the perfect send-off when they welcome Wolves to Anfield on Sunday, May 19 in their final game of the season.

Klopp stunned Reds fans with the announcement on January 26 that he would be leaving at the end of the current campaign following nine largely successful years on Merseyside.

Klopp's side were genuine contenders for the Premier League title until last month when they dropped points against Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Everton and West Ham to fall off the pace set by Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Merseyside giants are set to finish comfortably in third place after playing out to a 3-3 draw with Aston Villa at Villa Park on May 13 which left them nine points adrift of the summit with one match remaining.

Wanderers were challenging for a top-half finish at one stage, but a poor run of results in recent weeks has seen them drop to 13th in the standings, two points shy of Brighton (10th) and Bournemouth (11th).

Crystal Palace climbed above them up to 12th spot on goal difference with a 3-1 victory at Molineux on May 11 - their fourth defeat in five games.

In team news, the hosts continue to be without Joel Matip (knee) and Thiago Alcantara (thigh), while Diogo Jota (groin) and Andrew Robertson are rated doubtful. Pedro Neto (thigh) could come back into contention for the visitors, but Craig Dawson (groin) and  Leon Chiwone (ankle) remain unavailable.

Klopp acknowledged there were some positives to take from the season such as the development of Harvey Elliott and the emergence of the likes of Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley.

"I am allowed to see just the good bits of it. If you carry on, you have to think about what didn't go well because then you have to make changes, adjustments, whatever, but that's obviously not me," the German said.

"The good things, yes, I said it before. It's interesting Harvey came through [in the question], Harvey is already in his third season, if not the fourth. He's already a while here, he was already the best player and badly injured and stuff like this. But, yes, a good game today.

"Jarell, yes, Conor [Bradley], yes, James McConnell, Bobby Clark, Kaide Gordon, [he was] long, long injured [but] back now, really good, Stefan Bajcetic. So, the basis is there, and all the other big guns really; the basis is there.

"New influences always help, that's how it is. We did what we could and if we could have done better, we probably would have, let me say it like that. Now we are where we are and that's it."

Wolves head coach Gary O'Neil wants to spoil Klopp's farewell party with another memorable away victory, having already beaten Chelsea and Tottenham on their travels this year.

"Although we've just had the end-of-season awards and the lap of appreciation, it feels like the end of the season, but we've still got one more game to go, a chance to go away to Anfield and try and add another memorable victory on the road," O'Neil said.

"We've had a few of those this year, so I'm proud of the players and they deserve a huge amount of respect, but I'm just disappointed that we've had to crawl towards the line when we wanted to go crashing through it and finish with some momentum."
